Long Hot Summer
August 3rd, 2009 by Angela
I am officially a slave to air conditioning. Honestly, I swear never to say anything bad about the British Summer Time ever again. One minute it is sweltering hot here, the next you're caught biggest, baddest scariest thunder storm you ever saw. What shoes am I supposed to wear in weather like this? And we won't even get onto what it's doing to my hair.

God, how English am I? As if you're even slightly interested in talking about the weather. We have lots more important things to talk about, right? Like... ooh, low-fat Ben & Jerry's Phish Food! I nearly cried when I saw it in my corner store but apparently, a helpful friend from London tells me you can get it there now too. Annoying.

Um, has Anthroplogie opened on Regents Street yet? No? Good. We have about four of them and they are amazing. Such pretty, pretty things. Have a look at www.anthropologie.com and start your shopping list. I love the tea cups and candles but my flatmate Jenny says if I buy one more tea cup she's going to do something really unpleasant to it (something I once did to a washbag incidentally) so I'm probably done.

Oh, and bejesus, Jenny also just introduced me to San Loco tacos. Why don't we have tacos in the UK? And I'm not talking about Old El Paso (do you know you don't put salsa and sour cream and stuff in them here? Less messy.) I'm talking about catfish tacos with a fried taco shell wrapped in a soft flour tortilla that has been lined with guacamole. OMG. I nearly cried. And it wasn't because I drank three vodka and fresh limeades in the same establishment...

And to the person that wanted to know if I was actually in New York, yes I am. I wanted to do the whole take a photo of the newspaper thing but the picture uploads aren't working at the moment and I realised that might be a bit scary and over the top anyway. So you're going to have to trust me. Or ask me a question I could only answer if I was here - a safe, clean question. I was at a free gig in Prospect Park on Saturday night, it was the Crystal Stilts and Dean&Britta and my friend bought a Bud Light with Lime but didn't drink it because it 'tasted like ass'. You could, I suppose, talk to everyone at  that show and verify that way?

You may have noticed I'm avoiding boy-related topics. This is mainly because I saw this brilliant old chair at a junk shop in Williamsburg (called Junk. Go there, it is brilliant) for ten dollars, bought it, dragged it home all by myself thinking 'ooh, I don't need a man, I'm practically Beyonce, all the single ladies, all the single ladies' and then, after I'd hauled it up my stairs, put it under my desk and sat down down to write, I realised that it was about an inch too short. So I laid on my bed and cried, like a girl. At least if I'd had a boy to drag the chair back, I wouldn't have been as knackered. And I would have had someone else to blame.

Instead, I now hit the desk at boob level and scratch my wrists when I try and write. Also, it is so hot I'm stuck to the vinyl and daren't stand up for fear of losing half the skin on my thighs.
What I go through for you.

I bought your book as a bit of "light relief" reading and I loved it. I have been to NY several times and love it more than any where I've ever been. Just thinking about it makes me happy/sad in equal measure. Although I'm a country girl I've always felt I could live there quite comfortably. Can't think of much, other than people, that I'd miss.

Hello, my daughter raved on soooo much about your book I just had to read it. As a 54 year old mum (sorry not too cool for you), it put so much into perspective and helped me understand some of your stuff! Brilliant read, can't wait for the next one; I'm going to tell all the girls at school about it when we returned in Sept. Thanks.

Just read the book in less than a day. Spent my day in bed (nursing my stomach cramps and over emotional self!), and  couldn't put it down. I actually cried when Jenny and Angela fought and then Alex turned up at the gallery and was sooo happy at the end. I am desperate to go to New York (was supposed to be going in October for my 30th but funds aren't that great!), but am definately now guna save up for next year as a present to myself! Hopefully I may find myself a Jenny or Tyler but would prefer an Alex!! A fabulous book and it just proves that we women can do it. Thankyou very it much, it has cheered my day up.xxx
